Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson was born in Paris France to British parents Jacqueline Luesby and Chris Watson who were both lawyers. When she moved to Oxfordshire when she was five, she enrolled in The Dragon School. Emma was just six at the time she decided to be an actor. She studied for a number of years at Stagecoach Theatre Arts, a partially-time theater school in Oxford in which she learned singing and acting. By the time she turned 10 Emma was a participant in multiple Stagecoach productions as well as school productions. Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone was the film of 2001 adaption of J.K. Rowling's bestselling book was filmed in 1999. Emma was discovered by agents through their Oxford teacher. David Heyman, the producer of Harry Potter Harry Potter's Sorcerer's Stone, and Ron Weasley told Emma after the eight auditions that she'd been chosen for these roles. Emma was chosen to play alongside Daniel Radcliffe Rupert Grint and Rupert Grint. The release of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001) was Emma's first cinematic screen appearance. It was also the biggest and most well-received film of the year. The first weekend and day revenues were record-breaking. Reviewers have been highly acclaimed of the film, as well as the performance of the three principal young actors. The Daily Telegraph, an influential British newspaper, praised Emma's performance "amazing". Emma's performance received nominations and won five awards later for the movie.
